Welcome to Reception!
Our themes and topics are decided alongside the children and their interests and other exciting, seasonal events This helps to inspire and develop enthusiasm for learning. We aim to create a caring and supportive environment where our children can learn through hands on activities and experiences.
We have lots of wonderful spaces for the children to explore and learn in. In addition to our three indoor classrooms we have a large dedicated outdoor area, sensory room and a brand new woodland play space! We also make full use of the learning spaces available to the whole school including the school hall and field for our PE sessions and the Green Room for other exciting activities and reflection time.
Our reception class love to get out into the community and make the most of our lovely village. After we have settled into our new classroom we like to visit the village library on a weekly basis for a story time session and attend the church coffee mornings. We also welcome visitors to school to further enhance our children's learning experiences.
The Reception Year is an exciting but busy year! We encourage the children to develop independence during their time with us. We place a great deal of emphasis on developing early writing, reading and number skills. We value the support from our parents in supporting their children with these key life skills. All of our children bring home a reading book each night and additional activities to support the development of their number and phonics skills. We support parents with workshops and communication via 'Class Dojo' so that our children have the maximum opportunity to reach their full potential.
Parents are kept up-to-date with their child's progress through our online learning journey 'Tapestry'. We regularly post observations, photographs and videos of your child in this safe, online forum so that you can enjoy your child's learning journey with them

Some of our favourite things about being in Reception!
Term Six - What can you do at the seaside?
While school is closed we will be enjoying our weekly activities at home. We will be writing poetry and pirate adventure stories. We will also be thinking about doubling and halving. We will be creating our own seaside postcards and designing mermaid tails. Mrs Hall has challenged us to make sea creatures using things we can find in our house.
We have already sent Mrs Hall lots of pictures of our super home learning!
Term Five - What lives in the garden?
While school is closed we will be enjoying our weekly activities at home. We will be writing instructions on how to plant a seed and making a list of what plants need to grow. Mrs Hall has some caterpillars at her house, so she will send us pictures and videos so we can watch them change into butterflies! We will be hunting for minibeasts and painting and drawing pictures of beautiful flowers!
We have already sent Mrs Hall lots of pictures of our fantastic home learning!
Term Four - Who lives in a house like this?
This term we will be exploring fairy tales and thinking about where the different characters live. We will be writing our own instructions to build a house and we will be exploring the houses in our local area. We will also be thinking about what makes a good friend and exploring how different household items work (whisks, hairdryers, juicers, etc). We will celebrate World Book Day and make vegetable smoothies. Young Farmers are coming to our school to talk to us about farming and tractors!
Term Three - Are we there yet?
This term is all about transport! We will spend time looking at different types of transport including, aeroplanes, buses, cars and unusual transport like broomsticks and hot air balloons. We will find out about Ruskington village and create our own maps as well as explore Mrs Hall's car and learn how to travel safely.
Term Two - What is your favourite animal?
This term we will be looking at different types of animals. We will be exploring pets, jungle animals, nocturnal animals, sea creatures and Artic animals. We will learn about animals and their habitats and how to care for animals. We will also take part in nursery rhyme week and enjoy various Christmas activities.
Term One - Who can help us?
This term we will start by thinking about how we can help ourselves and who helps us at home. We will talk with our new friends about our favourite things and the people in our family. We will then look at people who help us in school and the community and learn about different job roles and who helps us in an emergency. We might even have a special visitor! We will finish the term by looking at superhero stories, practice retelling different stories and thinking carefully about what characters are feeling and saying.
