Welcome to Reception!

Our themes and topics are decided alongside the children and their interests and other exciting, seasonal events This helps to inspire and develop enthusiasm for learning. We aim to create a caring and supportive environment where our children can learn through hands on activities and experiences.

We have lots of wonderful spaces for the children to explore and learn in. In addition to our three indoor classrooms we have a large dedicated outdoor area, sensory room and a brand new woodland play space! We also make full use of the learning spaces available to the whole school including the school hall and field for our PE sessions and the Green Room for other exciting activities and reflection time.

Our reception class love to get out into the community and make the most of our lovely village. After we have settled into our new classroom we like to visit the village library on a weekly basis for a story time session and attend the church coffee mornings. We also welcome visitors to school to further enhance our children's learning experiences.

The Reception Year is an exciting but busy year! We encourage the children to develop independence during their time with us. We place a great deal of emphasis on developing early writing, reading and number skills. We value the support from our parents in supporting their children with these key life skills. All of our children bring home a reading book each night and additional activities to support the development of their number and phonics skills. We support parents with workshops and communication via 'Class Dojo' so that our children have the maximum opportunity to reach their full potential.

Parents are kept up-to-date with their child's progress through our online learning journey 'Tapestry'. We regularly post observations, photographs and videos of your child in this safe, online forum so that you can enjoy your child's learning journey with them

Church School Value:

Term Four Church School Value is Forgiveness. We will be thinking about what forgiveness means, how we can learn to be forgiving and what it takes to forgive somebody.

Our Topics and Themes

Term Four - Circle of life.

This term we will be thinking about different animal life cycles throughout the term and creating bug hotels in our forest area. We will be writing instructions and food diary's in Literacy and in Maths we will be thinking about addition and subtraction and becoming more confident in our number bonds to 10. We are very excited for World Book day too!

Term Three - Tale as old as time.

This term some of us will be learning from home while we are in lockdown.

We will be thinking about traditional tales in particular, Goldilocks, The three little pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk. We will immerse ourselves in the text and learn the tales in order to retell and act them out. We will then draw story maps and write our own character and setting descriptions for our own tales. In Maths we will be thinking about addition and subtraction and becoming more confident in our number bonds to 5.

Term Two - Dinosaur Stomp!

This term we will be exploring Dinosaurs! The Children are very excited for this topic! We will be busy creating dinosaur models, labelling them and writing descriptions about them. We already have lots of dinosaur resources to help us with our counting and sorting in Maths to help us explore numbers and learn new mathematical vocabulary. We will be using technology to research dinosaur facts to help us make lots of wonderful dinosaur artefacts. We will also be taking part in lots of wonderful winter and Christmas activities.

Term One - This is me!

This term we will start by thinking about how we are similar and different compared to our new friends. We will talk with our new friends about our favourite things and the people in our family. We will practice making story maps about some of our favourite stories and we will be learning all about the numbers 1-5. We will look closely at toys and games from a long time ago and we will be exploring our village to compare the different buildings and the houses that we see.
