A message from Mrs Walton:

Welcome to Hazel Class! I am Mrs Walton, the Year 1 teacher at Chestnut Street Primary School. In Year 1 we begin the children's journey through Key Stage One. My aim is to bring warmth, creativity, and a love of learning to the classroom every day.

I especially enjoy teaching Reading, History, and Art, where I can spark children’s imaginations, build their confidence, and help them discover the joy of exploring new ideas.

Outside of school, I love spending time with my family, reading and I enjoy lots of different arts and crafts, including knitting, crochet and paper cutting art. I hope my natural creativity shines both in the classroom and in my hobbies, and I enjoy finding fun, hands-on ways to help my pupils learn and express themselves. This is particularly important in Year 1 as we build on the foundations from their time in EYFS consolidating the practices of independent learning, introducing skills and strategies to help the children meet their true potential.

In Hazel class, the children take part in a variety of whole class, group and independent learning opportunities throughout the day to ensure they have a wide range of experiences both in and outside the classroom. Our classroom is a place where curiosity is encouraged, creativity is celebrated, and every child feels valued.

In June the children will have their Phonics Screening Check, they are required to take this statutory government assessment to identify children's phonics decoding skills.

P.E

Hazel class - PE day is Tuesday (afternoon) unless we send a message via MCAS to advise of a change.

Please ensure children come to school with their correct P.E kits in a suitable bag on a Monday every week. Children need both indoor and outdoor clothing and footwear in order for us to benefit fully from our P.E Lessons. Please ensure long hair is tied up and all jewellery removed. If your child cannot remove their own ear studs, please ensure you take them out on the day.

Reading

"Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible."

Reading is a core aspect of the Year One curriculum.

We read regularly with the children in school and ask that our children read to an adult at home at least four times each week. Please record your child’s daily reading in their reading diary so that we can see how they are getting on.

It is important for the children to bring in their reading folder each day in order to keep their books updated and to read to an adult in school.

Trips/Visitors

In term 5 we will be visiting a wildlife park.  We will be learning about animals throughout the year. This will complete our learning and to cement our knowledge.

Home Learning

Please read as frequently as possible with your child: read to them to model expression and allow opportunities for them to read to a sibling, pet or teddy. Read comics, signs, menus, leaflets, posters, labels in supermarkets and a variety of books. The children are expected to read at least five times over a week and record this in their reading record. In May year 1 children will take the government's ‘Phonics Screening Assessment’ so it is important that we practice our sounds at home.

The children are encouraged to practice their weekly spelling patterns by completing assignments on the spelling shed website:  https://www.edshed.com/  (Their logins are in their reading diaries)

The children will be given a weekly Maths challenge, which is relevant to the work they have done in class that week. Completing these tasks will enable your child to reinforce their mathematical knowledge and improve their problem-solving abilities. The intention is to allow the children to apply their learning independently. Homework will be set on Friday and must be completed and returned to school by the following Thursday.

We welcome volunteers to listen to readers. Please contact the school office if you would like to support us with this.
