Leaders have prioritised the teaching of early reading.  There is now a consistent approach that starts in the early years.  Staff have received effective training.  They ensure that pupils have reading books that match the sounds that they are learning.' Ofsted 2023

At Ruskington Chestnut Street CofE Primary Academy, we aim to develop confident, skilled writers who can communicate clearly and creatively. Using high‑quality texts, explicit vocabulary teaching and a structured Writing Journey, children learn to plan, draft, revise and edit their work for a range of purposes. Speaking and listening are embedded to support idea development, while phonics, spelling, handwriting and grammar are taught progressively. From early mark‑making in EYFS to genre‑based writing in KS2, pupils build strong transcription and composition skills. By Year 6, children write with accuracy, coherence and independence, equipped for the demands of the secondary curriculum.

At Ruskington Chestnut Street CofE Primary Academy, reading sits at the heart of our curriculum. Our aim is for every child to become a fluent, confident and enthusiastic reader by the end of Year 6. Children experience a rich and diverse ‘Reading Spine’, exploring high‑quality fiction, non‑fiction, poetry and classic texts that broaden their understanding of the world. Early reading is built through high‑quality phonics using Read Write Inc, followed by whole‑class reading that develops comprehension, vocabulary and fluency through the EARS approach. Daily reading, storytelling and home reading partnerships help foster a lifelong love of books and equip children to access learning across the curriculum.

Children experience a wide range of high‑quality texts, authors and genres, and enjoy daily story sharing across the school. As pupils progress, whole‑class reading develops vocabulary, understanding and expression. Through rich reading experiences and strong home partnerships, we help every child become an enthusiastic, lifelong reader.
