Intent and implementation

At Ruskington Chestnut Street Primary Academy, we value Physical Education and want all our children to: -

  • Engage in the learning of transferable leadership skills and achieve an award or qualification for doing so (fit to lead);
  • Know how to use physical activity to enhance their physical and mental well-being so that being active forms part of their life long identity (fit for life);
  • Develop the confidence to perform under pressure (fit to perform);

Underpinning this is a key focus on improving children’s communication skills, vocabulary and the ambition that all children will take part regardless of background, needs or ability.

At Chestnut Street we use 3 strands (PESSPA) when discussing our physical education. This is to ensure there is a clear understanding for all staff and parents regarding the purpose and impact of all the aspects of physical education the children take part in.

The three strands are:

  • Physical Education (taught curriculum)
  • School Sport (structured competitive and non-competitive programme)
  • Physical Activity (minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity a day)

Each of these strands are vitally important and contributes to the health and well-being of our children.

Underpinning this is a key focus on improving children’s communication skills, vocabulary and the ambition that all children will take part regardless of background, needs or ability.

 Physical Education

 Physical Education is planned progressively across the school to ensure children learn how to move, co-operate with others along with developing skills beyond physical activity. Chestnut Street aims to provide all pupils with 2 hours of timetabled PE per week. In EYFS and Key Stage 1 they will learn object control, movement, balance, dance and gymnastics. In Key Stage 2 the children will learn invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, health related fitness, target games, athletics and outdoor adventure activities.

School Sport

 Chestnut Street has developed a well-structured competitive and non-competitive school sport programme which offers the opportunity for all young people to be involved in a range of sports and provide a meaningful experience. The school primarily focuses upon Football, Netball and Dance. But throughout the year children have the opportunity to represent the school at Tennis Athletics, Dance, Tag Rugby and Tri-Golf. These events are provided by the School Sport Partnership. We believe competitive sport develops a range of life skills which can support young people as they progress through school and into adult life. Everything from the benefits of teamwork, resilience and leadership skills, to the respect and humility in handling success or disappointment.

Physical Activity

 The Government Childhood Obesity Plan has set out the ambition for all children to achieve 60 minutes of physical activity every day, with schools being responsible for delivering 30 of these active minutes.

30 Minutes of Daily Activity at Chestnut Street include:

  • Playtime Equipment
  • Daily Mile
  • Lunchtime Sport Clubs
  • After School Sport Clubs
  • Go Noodle
  • BBC Premier League Supermovers
